Recreation Ground

Recreation Ground

On 1st October 1991 an open meeting was held in the village and a fundraising committee was formed to develop the recreation ground, it was named Hinstock Recreation Association. The committee with guidance from the Parish Council enabled the village to have an open green space.

Through fundraising and grant aid the village now has an open green space that can be used for recreational purposes. Currently we have 2 x all-weather flood-lit tennis courts, flood-lit 5-A-Side court, cycle ramps, youth shelter, football pitch and a children’s play area. The football pitch has recently had new drainage installed; access to the recreation ground is by a tarmac path with security lighting.

Future phases/projects will hopefully include a bowling green and a sports pavilion.

Youth Shelter

Youth Shelter

Hinstock is a growing village and has a large group of young people who liked to congregate around the Memorial Hall. They were often told to go away by those who hired the hall due to the noise that they were making. Parishioners and the young people approached the council and the young people wanted a place which they could call their own.

The solution was a youth shelter. This idea allowed the young people to take ownership of an area which would become theirs. Choosing the location was hard due to a number of issues, we wanted it located where they or passers by would not feel intimidated, still giving them privacy, but still offering inclusion in the village community.

The youth shelter was funded by two grants, £4,200 from the BIG lottery grant and £1,880 from LJC, Shropshire Council.

The youth shelter is located on the recreation ground alongside bike ramps and the 5-a-side area. It can be seen from all entrances onto the recreation ground.

It was erected in 2008 and has not been vandalised.  We have had intermittent problems with litter, but this is being addressed by the Parish Council.  A litter bin has been ordered and hopefully in location by end July 2010. People did fear the trouble it may bring, but the young people have treated it with respect and it is a great success.

Flood-Lit Multi-Use 5-A-Side Area

5-A-Side Area

From a 106 agreement, Hinstock Parish Council negotiated £60,000 from a new development to fund a multi-use 5-A-Side area with lighting and other projects within the recreation ground.

It has open access throughout the day and is currently used on a Thursday evening for football training.

Cycle Ramps

CycleRamps

A group of teenagers approached the council regarding having cycle ramps in the village. The parish council were keen to encourage this interest and agreed that if match funding could be found, the scheme could go ahead. Hinstock Parish Council received a grant of £4,500 from the LJC for the scheme.

The teenagers were consulted throughout the whole decision making process in looking at the types of ramps suitable for the site, budget constraints and the location in which they were to be installed. They were installed in time for the summer holiday of 2009 and have been a great success

Tennis Courts

Tennis Club

Although Hinstock had a thriving tennis club in the 1920s and 1930s, boasting 4 grass courts; by 1964 the courts had fallen into disrepair and reverted back to being used as agricultural land and ultimately became the Roman Way housing estate.

Step forwards almost 40 years and the Parish Council, along with a committed group of villages, put together a successful bid for funding. After much effort by all involved, 2 new hard courts were built in 2001. The management of the courts was taken over by the newly created Hinstock Lawn Tennis Club committee. The courts are available for use by both members and non-members; non members can hire the courts through a booking system held at the village shop. More details about the club can be found at http://tennis.hinstock.com.
